The Chiropractic Story

Chiropractors specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of biomechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly those involving the spine and their effects on the nervous system

Chiropractic originated over 100 years ago in the USA with the work of Daniel David Palmer. Palmer developed his theory of musculoskeletal effects on the nervous system, and invented manipulative techniques to relieve them. The first ever chiropractic treatment that took place was that of Harvey Lillard in 1895, a janitor in Palmer's building. The treatment was an astonishing success.

D. D. Palmer called his healing art "Chiropractic" arising from two Greek words, chiro meaning "hand" and praktos meaning "done by".

The following year the Palmer School was established in Davenport, Iowa. There are now 16 chiropractic colleges and approaching 50 000 chiropractors in the USA alone.

In the 100 years since that first treatment a variety of different colleges and techniques have evolved - all, however have broadly the same aims:

Chiropractic treatment consists of manipulative techniques known as "adjustments". Numerous methods of adjustment have evolved over the years and one of these is McTimoney Chiropractic.
